Interstate 10: Sierra Avenue Interchange

Construction at the Sierra Avenue InterchangeSANBAG provided funding support for the improvement of the Sierra Avenue interchange in Fontana. City of Fontana and Caltrans officials held a groundbreaking ceremony in November 2000 to mark the start of construction on this greatly needed interchange. Construction started in early 2001 and was completed in 2003. SANBAG contributed $10 million to this $18.3 million project, which was a joint effort between the City of Fontana and Caltrans.

Improvements included:

  • Replacing the Sierra Avenue freeway overcrossing,
  • Widening the railroad overhead structure,
  • Reconstructing all ramps,
  • Widening the street by one lane in each direction, and
  • Building new auxiliary lanes on Interstate 10 from Sierra Avenue to Citrus Avenue.

The project provided both safety improvements and congestion relief. A metal beam guardrail, upgraded drainage facilities, and better sight distance enhance driver safety. New signal lights and additional lanes now relieve congestion for drivers entering and exiting the freeway, as well as drivers using Sierra Avenue as a north-south route through the city.
