Measure I: State Route 71 - Chino Valley Freeway
The
Chino Valley Freeway, State Route 71, is complete. Thanks to Measure I, this two-lane, previously treacherous highway was transformed into eight lanes of safe, efficient freeway. The new freeway features six mixed-flow lanes and two carpool lanes.
Construction began in October 1994 and was completed in October 1997. The 8.5-mile freeway stretches from the Los Angeles/San Bernardino County line through the communities of Chino and Chino Hills. This new freeway improves safety and serves as an important connector between San Bernardino, Riverside, and Los Angeles counties. This project was the first SANBAG/Caltrans freeway partnership and totaled nearly $200 million.
The final stage in the Chino Valley Freeway, landscaping work, was completed in April 2007. The cities of Chino and Chino Hills and the County of San Bernardino, in partnership with SANBAG, were successful in obtaining a Transportation Enhancement Activities (TEA) grant of $2 million for landscaping improvements on the Chino Valley Freeway. SANBAG led the design effort to install the landscaping, irrigation, and decorative rock blanket that were the landscaping themes preferred by the community.
