Measure I:
I-10 Westbound Lane Addition Project

I-10 in Yucaipa

SANBAG, in cooperation with Caltrans and the cities of Yucaipa and Redlands, is adding a new lane on westbound Interstate 10 between Yucaipa and Redlands. The project is designed to reduce traffic congestion along this heavily traveled section of freeway. Construction is expected to start in early 2011 and last slightly more than two years.

Project Overview & Significance

The project will add a general purpose lane to approximately 3.5 miles of westbound I-10 between Live Oak Canyon Road in Yucaipa and Ford Street in Redlands. The new lane will add capacity to this heavily traveled section of freeway, which is frequently congested on weekday mornings.

To add this lane and ensure proper sight distance for motorists, construction crews will cut back the slope north of the freeway between Yucaipa Boulevard and Wabash Avenue and build an 18-foot retaining wall. Ramp meters will be placed at the westbound Yucaipa Boulevard on-ramp. No other improvements to ramps, bridges or interchanges will be needed for the project. Sound walls also will not be required.

The freeway will be widened on both the inside and outside shoulders, requiring some temporary construction easements, but minimal permanent property purchases.

SANBAG received environmental approval for this project in June 2007. Final design and right-of-way were completed in early 2010.

The project is the last in a series of four planned improvements to San Bernardino County’s East Valley. Previously completed projects, all funded in part by Measure I, the half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements in San Bernardino County, include:

  1. Construction of a truck-climbing lane on eastbound I-10 between Ford Street and Live Oak Canyon Road; completed in 2005
  2. Addition of one eastbound and one westbound general purpose lane on I-10 between Orange and Ford Streets in Redlands; completed in 2007
  3. Reconstruction of the Live Oak Canyon Road Interchange in Yucaipa; completed in 2009

Construction Safety Tips

The safety of construction crews and motorists is SANBAG’s highest priority during this project. Please follow these safety tips near the I-10 construction zone:

  • Slow down and watch for construction workers and heavy equipment.
  • Remember that traffic fines are doubled in construction zones.
  • Allow extra time to get to work, school or appointments.
  • Notify visitors to your home or business about construction work along the freeway.
  • Be extra careful when driving at night and in rainy weather.
  • Immediately report to the police any suspicious activity on construction sites.
  • Avoid using your mobile phone or other distractions when driving through this area.
  • Watch for occasional ramp closures or lane closures and use alternate routes.
  • Be patient. Please remember that this is a short-term inconvenience for a long-term solution to traffic congestion.

SANBAG will keep a photo record of the construction on the I-10 Widening project from the first Open House event. All photos will be shown within Adobe Acrobat (pdf) files.

Traffic Data (2006-2008)
