Grade Separation: State Street/University Parkway
The construction of a bridge (also known as a grade separation) over the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks at State Street/University Parkway in the City and County of San Bernardino began in May 2007. The project will help reduce traffic congestion on State Street due to train delays blocking the street at the railroad crossing.
About the Project
The will realign State Street/University Parkway and provide a bridge over the BNSF tracks that cross State, to eliminate the need for drivers to wait for trains. The newly constructed bridge is designed to accommodate two lanes of traffic, a sidewalk and a bicycle lane in each direction, as well as a center turn lane.
The project will realign Nolan Street and Short Street where they intersect State. Traffic signals will be added to the intersections at State and Short, Cajon Boulevard and Short, and University Parkway and Interchange Drive.
Construction will take 18 to 24 months to complete and will cost more than $20 million. This project is funded primarily by the state’s Traffic Congestion Relief Program, with a contribution from BNSF railroad.
