Grade Separation: Palm Avenue
The construction of a bridge (also known as a grade separation) over the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railroad tracks at Palm Avenue in the City of San Bernardino is currently in the planning stages.
The project is expected to provide a two-lane bridge over BNSF railroad tracks to eliminate the need for motorists and emergency vehicles to wait for trains to pass. The project also will provide unimpeded access to warehouse, distribution and industrial facilities located in the area.
Various alignments for the bridge are currently being studied. In additional, some adjacent local streets may require reconfiguration to improve traffic and safety.
Project approval and environmental documentation for the project is expected to be received in early 2010. Approval of design and right of way certification is expected mid 2012. Construction is estimated to begin by end of 2012 and last approximately 18-24 months. The project cost is estimated at approximately $36 million, with funding from Measure I, Trade Corridor Improvement Fund, and other local funds.
