East Valley Truck Study

Truckand a car on the freewayThe Inland Empire area continues to be one of the highest growth areas in Southern California and is expected to continue this growth in the future. New development initiatives in the east valley of San Bernardino County, including those associated with the San Bernardino International Airport and Trade Center, as directed by the Inland Valley Development Authority (IVDA), the Burlington Northern/Santa Fe Inter-modal Facility, and the proposed inter-modal "Inland Port" facility are expected to substantially increase and change traffic and truck patterns.

Freeways and major streets currently need improvement to deal with existing problems, as well as anticipated future growth. There is a clear need to properly quantify the vehicular and truck traffic and examine the dynamics of truck traffic among these developments, as well as their possible interaction links with rail facilities.

SANBAG, the Inland Valley Development Authority, and the City of San Bernardino are jointly sponsoring an East Valley Truck Study to develop the most reasonable and reliable traffic and truck forecasts for this area. The study, which began in spring 2001, addresses SANBAG's interest in accurate forecasts for freeway and interchange design projects, the IVDA's desire for high quality regional access to the area, and the City of San Bernardino's needs and concerns related to managing the impacts of the increased vehicle and truck traffic.

SANBAG accepted a draft report with findings of the East Valley Truck Study in October 2002. Data shows that by 2020, the east end of the San Bernardino Valley will see:

  • Up to 100% growth in truck volumes, especially along Interstate 10 and Interstate 215;
  • A heavy east-west orientation of truck movement, compared to north-south
  • High volumes of trucks on corridors parallel to congested freeways

A set of recommendations was provided for improvements needed to accommodate the flow of goods and other vehicular traffic.
