Regional Transportation Improvement Program

Route 60 carpool lanesSANBAG participates in the development of the Regional Transportation Improvement Program (RTIP), assembled by the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG). The RTIP is a listing of all capital transportation projects proposed over a six-year period for the SCAG region. Projects include highway improvements, transit, rail and bus facilities, carpool lanes, signal synchronization, intersection improvements, freeway ramps and other related improvements. In the SCAG region, updates are made to the RTIP every two years, during even-numbered years.

The RTIP is prepared to implement projects and programs listed in the Regional Transportation Plan (RTP). This document is developed in compliance with state and federal requirements. County Transportation Commissions have the responsibility under state law of proposing county projects, using the current RTP's policies, programs and projects as a guide, from among submittals by cities and local agencies. The locally prioritized lists of projects are forwarded to SCAG for review. From this list, SCAG develops the RTIP based on consistency with the current RTP, inter-county connectivity, financial constraint and conformity satisfaction.
