Safety Program

Safety is one of SANBAG's top priorities in building State Route 210. To continue its excellent safety record, SANBAG has implemented a complete safety campaign for the community.

One component is the "Play it Safe" program for children in Rialto and San Bernardino schools. This program includes assemblies and back-to-school nights to inform children and their families to not play or ride bikes, scooters, or skateboards near the construction sites. Children are taught about the dangers of construction equipment, due to the equipment’s size and speed. Pencils, reflective zipper clips, homework materials and cafeteria banners are used to reinforce the “Play it Safe” message.

Through community meetings and notices, adults also are urged to make a commitment to safety near construction zones. The slogan, “Safety: It’s No Accident!” is used to remind community members about the need for safe driving.

Safety tips include:

  • Travel with caution and slow down when in construction zones. Be alert for construction workers, children, cyclists, pedestrians and heavy equipment.

  • Allow plenty of time for possible driving delays. Plan ahead and learn alternate routes.

  • Tell visitors about construction detours and delays.

  • Follow posted signs that explain detours, lane closures and other changes in driving conditions. Remember that traffic fines are doubled in construction areas.

  • Use extra caution in the evenings or during rainy weather.

  • Immediately report to the police any suspicious activity or children playing in construction zones. Do not jog, cycle or walk pets in construction sites. Trespassers will be cited.

  • When possible, use public transportation, walk, cycle or carpool to reduce traffic congestion. Try to avoid construction zones during peak commute times.

  • Make driving near construction a “no phone zone.” Turn off mobile phones and pagers to avoid distractions.

  • Be patient. Remember that construction is a short-term inconvenience for a long-term benefit that will ease traffic congestion.
