Highland Wins with Renewal of Measure I

Voters gave a resounding “Yes” November 2 to the continuation of Measure I, the half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements in San Bernardino County. With all of the precincts reporting, the vote tallied more than 80% in favor of Measure I, the highest level of support for a transportation sales tax measure statewide.

In November 1989, San Bernardino County voters first approved Measure I, which has funded more than 3,000 local road projects, 332 new lane miles of freeways, the Metrolink passenger rail system, low bus fares for seniors and riders with disabilities and many more transportation improvements.

Last November, county voters were asked to extend the measure for an additional 30 years beyond its expiration date in 2010. Measure I will continue to provide revenue for transportation projects and services at the same rate, one-half cent per dollar.

Early this year, San Bernardino Associated Governments policy committees will begin discussing long-range planning for freeway, highway, interchange, major street and transit projects. Improvements planned for the Highland area include:

  • Widening of Route 30 through Highland, Redlands and San Bernardino

  • Improvements to Route 30 interchanges, such as, Baseline, 5 th Street, Highland, Del Rosa and Waterman

  • Widening of I-10 through the East Valley

  • Improvements to I-10 interchanges, such as Tippecanoe/Anderson, Mt. View, California and Alabama

  • Nearly $31 million over 30 years in local street and road improvements chosen by the City of Highland, including repairing potholes, widening streets, repaving roads, installing traffic signals or rebuilding bridges

  • New passenger rail service between Redlands and San Bernardino, and more frequent Metrolink service from the San Bernardino Valley to Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties

  • New express bus system to link major communities

  • Expanded special transit services and continued low bus fares for seniors and riders with disabilities

  • Programs to make current transportation systems more effective, like Freeway Service Patrols to clear accidents quickly, traffic signal synchronization and incentives for commuters who share rides.

Stay tuned for news about these projects and others designed to improve road safety and reduce traffic congestion.
