The High Desert Wins with Renewal of Measure I

Voters gave a resounding “Yes” November 2 to the continuation of Measure I, the half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements in San Bernardino County. With all of the precincts reporting, the vote tallied more than 80% in favor of Measure I, the highest level of support for a transportation sales tax measure statewide.

In November 1989, San Bernardino County voters first approved Measure I, which has funded more than 3,000 local road projects, 332 new lane miles of freeways, the Metrolink passenger rail system, low bus fares for seniors and riders with disabilities and many more transportation improvements.

This November, county voters were asked to extend the measure for an additional 30 years beyond its expiration date in 2010. Measure I will continue to provide revenue for transportation projects and services at the same rate, one-half cent per dollar.

After the first of the year, San Bernardino Associated Governments policy committees will begin discussing long-range planning for highway, major streets and transit projects. Improvements planned for the High Desert include:

  • Widening of I-15 through Hesperia and Victorville

  • New I-15 interchanges at La Mesa/Nisqualli Road, Ranchero Road and Eucalyptus Road

  • Additional lanes and safety improvements to Highway 395 through Adelanto, Hesperia and Victorville

  • Safety and traffic flow improvements to Routes 18, 138 and 330

  • New east-west roadways to relieve traffic congestion on Bear Valley Road

  • Development of the San Bernardino County portion of the new High Desert Corridor

  • Improvements to the Cajon Pass, including new lanes on I-15, widening of the I-15/I-215 interchange and development of new lanes for trucks only

  • Local street and road improvements chosen by the elected representatives of each jurisdiction, including repairing potholes, widening streets, repaving roads, improving storm drain systems to prevent flooding or installing traffic signals. Allocations for these local improvements over 30 years will be more than $31 million in the City of Adelanto, $94 million in the Town of Apple Valley, nearly $124 million in the City of Hesperia, more than $265 million in the City of Victorville and nearly $81 million in the unincorporated areas of the Victor Valley.

  • Expanded special transit services and continued low bus fares for seniors and riders with disabilities

Stay tuned for news about these projects and others designed to improve road safety and reduce traffic congestion.
