Helendale Wins with Renewal of Measure IVoters gave a resounding “Yes” November 2 to the continuation of Measure I, the half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements in San Bernardino County. With all of the precincts reporting, the vote tallied more than 80% in favor of Measure I, the highest level of support for a transportation sales tax measure statewide. In November 1989, San Bernardino County voters first approved Measure I, which has funded more than 3,000 local road projects, 332 new lane miles of freeways, the Metrolink passenger rail system, low bus fares for seniors and riders with disabilities and many more transportation improvements. This November, county voters were asked to extend the measure for an additional 30 years beyond its expiration date in 2010. Measure I will continue to provide revenue for transportation projects and services at the same rate, one-half cent per dollar. After the first of the year, San Bernardino Associated Governments policy committees will begin discussing long-range planning for highway, major street and transit projects.
