Big Bear Lake Wins with Renewal of Measure I

Voters gave a resounding “Yes” November 2 to the continuation of Measure I, the half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements in San Bernardino County. With all of the precincts reporting, the vote tallied more than 80% in favor of Measure I, the highest level of support for a transportation sales tax measure statewide.

In November 1989, San Bernardino County voters first approved Measure I, which has funded more than 3,000 local road projects, 332 new lane miles of freeways, the Metrolink passenger rail system, low bus fares for seniors and riders with disabilities and many more transportation improvements.

This November, county voters were asked to extend the measure for an additional 30 years beyond its expiration date in 2010. Measure I will continue to provide revenue for transportation projects and services at the same rate, one-half cent per dollar.

After the first of the year, San Bernardino Associated Governments policy committees will begin discussing long-range planning for highway, major street and transit projects. Improvements planned for the Big Bear Lake area include:

  • Safety, intersection and/or traffic flow improvements to Routes 18, 38 and 330

  • Nearly $29 million for the City of Big Bear Lake and more than $58 million for the unincorporated San Bernardino County Mountains area over 30 years for local street and road improvements chosen elected representatives for each of these cities. Improvements could include repairing potholes and repaving roads affected by low temperatures.

  • Continued low bus fares and expanded service by the Mountain Area Regional Transit Authority for seniors and riders with disabilities

Stay tuned for news about these projects and others designed to improve road safety and reduce traffic congestion.
