Barstow Wins with Renewal of Measure I

City of Barstow

Voters gave a resounding “Yes” November 2 to the continuation of Measure I, the half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements in San Bernardino County. With all of the precincts reporting, the vote tallied more than 80% in favor of Measure I, the highest level of support for a transportation sales tax measure statewide.

In November 1989, San Bernardino County voters first approved Measure I, which has funded more than 3,000 local road projects, 332 new lane miles of freeways, the Metrolink passenger rail system, low bus fares for seniors and riders with disabilities and many more transportation improvements.

This November, county voters were asked to extend the measure for an additional 30 years beyond its expiration date in 2010. Measure I will continue to provide revenue for transportation projects and services at the same rate, one-half cent per dollar.

After the first of the year, San Bernardino Associated Governments policy committees will begin discussing long-range planning for highway, major street and transit projects. Improvements planned for the Barstow area include:

  • Widening and safety improvements to Route 58 and US Highway 395

  • Improvements to major streets, such as, Lenwood, Vista, Armory, Rimrock and Main Street

  • More than $38 million for the City of Barstow and nearly $28 million for the unincorporated North Desert Area over 30 years for local street and road improvements chosen by elected representatives from these cities. Improvements could include repairing potholes, widening streets, repaving roads or installing traffic signals.

  • Continued low bus fares and expanded service by the Barstow Area Transit for seniors and riders with disabilities

Stay tuned for news about these projects and others designed to improve road safety and reduce traffic congestion.
