Apple Valley Wins with Renewal of Measure I

Voters gave a resounding “Yes” November 2 to the continuation of Measure I, the half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements in San Bernardino County. With all of the precincts reporting, the vote tallied more than 80% in favor of Measure I, the highest level of support for a transportation sales tax measure statewide.

In November 1989, San Bernardino County voters first approved Measure I, which has funded more than 3,000 local road projects, 332 new lane miles of freeways, the Metrolink passenger rail system, low bus fares for seniors and riders with disabilities and many more transportation improvements.

This November, county voters were asked to extend the measure for an additional 30 years beyond its expiration date in 2010. Measure I will continue to provide revenue for transportation projects and services at the same rate, one-half cent per dollar.

After the first of the year, San Bernardino Associated Governments policy committees will begin discussing long-range planning for highway, major street and transit projects. Improvements planned for the Apple Valley area include:

  • Widening of I-15 through Hesperia and Victorville

  • New I-15 interchanges at La Mesa/Nisqualli Road, Ranchero Road and Eucalyptus Road

  • Widening of Highway 395 through Hesperia, Victorville and Adelanto

  • New east-west roadways to relieve traffic congestion on Bear Valley Road

  • Development of the San Bernardino County portion of the new High Desert Corridor

  • Improvements to the Cajon Pass, including new lanes on I-15, widening of the I-15/I-215 interchange and development of new lanes for trucks only

  • More than $94 million over 30 years in local street and road improvements chosen by the Town of Apple Valley, including repairing potholes, widening streets, repaving roads, improving storm drain systems to prevent flooding, or installing traffic signals

  • Expanded special transit services and continued low bus fares for seniors and riders with disabilities

Stay tuned for news about these projects and others designed to improve road safety and reduce traffic congestion.
