SANBAG Executive Director Norm King
Announces Retirement

San Bernardino Associated Governments (SANBAG) Executive Director Norm King yesterday announced his plans to retire from the agency, effective this winter.

King, 62, has headed the agency since August 1996 after serving as the city manager for the cities of Moreno Valley, Palm Springs and Claremont from 1974 to 1996. He is the current chairman of the International City/County Management Association Retirement Corporation, a financial services firm that provides deferred compensation to 800,000 state and local government employees. He also is a member of the Advisory Council of the Public Policy Institute of California.

During his time at SANBAG, King has overseen numerous transportation projects, including the construction of Route 210 and Route 71 and the widening of Interstate 10 and Route 60. Voter extension last November of Measure I, the half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements in San Bernardino County, was another career highlight.

The Board of Directors will be asked August 3 to authorize the agency’s Administrative Committee to hire a consultant to help with the recruitment of a new executive director. King expects to retire between mid-December and mid-January. He plans to travel and may pursue some part-time work after retiring.

“Norm is extremely well respected for his knowledge of transportation and government issues at the state and national levels. His expertise will be missed tremendously,” said Kelly Chastain, president of the SANBAG Board of Directors.
