Transportation Enhancement Activities

The Transportation Enhancement Activities (TEA) Program provides funding for projects that enhance quality of life, in or around transportation facilities. Projects must be over and above required mitigation and normal transportation projects, and the project must be directly related to the transportation system. The projects should have a quality of life benefit while providing the greatest benefit to the greatest number of people. Examples of projects include bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping, historic preservation, and wildlife preservation.

California's apportionment is estimated at $212 million for the term of SAFETEA, of which San Bernardino County's share is about $19 million. The SANBAG Board has set aside TEA funds to fully fund the larger regional projects within the county. There is a non-federal matching fund requirement of 11.47 percent for TEA-eligible projects. TEA funds are awarded on a reimbursement basis through the Caltrans Local Assistance process. Fund recipients are required to receive authorization from Caltrans before any reimbursable work begins.
