Commuter Information
Traffic
and air pollution create quality of life concerns among Southern California
residents. Millions of vehicles use southland freeways and surface streets
daily, resulting in frequent gridlock and contributing to air pollution.
Studies by the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) estimate that traffic conditions will continue to worsen. A freeway trip that takes one hour under normal conditions today is expected to take three hours and ten minutes in 2020. This congestion increases auto and truck emissions, which have a direct impact on the health of county residents.
SANBAG is serious about reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality and has created partnerships with public and private agencies to develop solutions with Southern California's future in mind.
A number of programs are in place to encourage the use of public transit, ridesharing, alternative fuels, advanced traveler information services, and call boxes for freeway emergencies.
SANBAG funds or operates the following programs:
- Metrolink Train Service
- Public Transit Service
- Ridesharing
- Carpool Lanes
- Alternative Fuels/Air Quality Program
- Intelligent Transportation Systems
- Call Boxes
- Specialized Transportation Directory
- Public and Specialized Transportation Advisory and Coordination Council (PASTACC) - Freeway Service Patrol (FSP)
